Coins, coins, coins… keeping track of Faerûn currencies in Dynamics AX

The Faerûn currency is pretty straight forward and we at the Waterdeep Trading Company want to take it all, and not a copper piece less. So that means that we need to be able to convert all of the different coins back to our gold piece standard that we are using to track all of our financials. For those of you that are not familiar with the Faerûn currencies, it’s pretty simple – there are five main currencies that people have in their money pouches – gp (gold pieces), ep (electrum pieces), sp (silver pieces), cp (copper pieces) and pp (platinum pieces) – and converting them is very straight forward as well. 1 gp = 2 ep = 10 sp = 50 cp = 1/5 pp Or if you like looking at them within a table then here is another way to look at it:

Setting this up within Dynamics AX is a breeze. To start off we just need to create separate currencies for each coin denomination that we are accepting: Then we can set up our currency conversions within the Currency Exchange Rates to convert the coins values: And now we are ready to accept any form of payment that we like. For example: The other day the Helm and Cloak came into the Waterdeep Trading Company store and ordered 100 Fighting Crickets for one of their events which they were having. We didn’t ask what they were doing with them because we were able to source them for them from the local Farming Guild at 1/2th of a cp each and charged them 1 sp each for a tidy little profit. The total order totaling up to 10 gp. When they came in to pay they tried to fool us by giving us 250 cp but Dynamics AX immediately caught this and we told them to come back with the rest of the money or else we would sick a local mage on them. What did they think we were a pack of Kobolds running this store? If you are interested in finding out more about the Currency Management within Dynamics AX then check out the Dynamics AX Companions resource pages on Configuring the General Ledger.  There is even a book that you can download that will show the ins out outs of currency management and how to set up automatic exchange rate downloads for the more modern realms.
